The word bookworm can be used in its literal and figurative meaning.
Literally, a bookworm means any insects feeding on glue and paper of books and documents and may harm them while eating them. Fortunately, it is not a common problem with modern books.
A bookworm is also a colloquial word for, in general, an enthusiastic book reader who enjoys reading and studying. It is interesting to note that there are various, more or less detailed definitions of the word which convey slightly different meanings. For example, a rather pejorative connotation might be that a bookworm is someone who is so much into poring over books that he or she is unaware of the outside world. As a result, it is being replaced by "a book lion, ruling the book jungle ".
