We humans are the only species capable of destroying our own home. What are we doing to the earth that is wrong?
- wiping out ecosystems and species, across the world,
- the forests are chains awed;
- the oceans are strip-mined of their fish;
- the rivers are polluted;
- the farmland is full of pesticides;
- the trashing of the natural world
- because of all of that climate is changing
- we cannot survive without clean water
- some people are already wearing masks in order to prevent getting sick in the first place…

The Earth is our only option for living, and nothing is more important than knowing what is happening to our home. Sometimes contemplating the future just means wondering whether it will snow tomorrow, or whether it will be a hot summer this year. We have to think bigger.

At least for the foreseeable future, this planet is the only home we’ve got. It would be useful to know if we will be able to live on it. I don't know what the climate will be like a hundred years from now, or a thousand or a million. I hope the greenhouse gases in our atmosphere won't reach an upper limit. I hope our planet won't end up like the super-heated surface of Venus, or like the frozen wasteland of Mars.

Climate is just one aspect of the planet Earth. I hope earthquakes and volcanoes will decrease in activity. Earth’s human population continues to grow and there are urban centres in areas of high risk called ‘flood zones’. I hope we will successfully cope with all these natural hazards. I am aware that the entire planet is a single system.

Some say that our planet is coming to an end because of global warming, rising gas and energy prices, shortages of food and water, disasters on land and sea. There are new diseases and economic uncertainty. Terrorist activity is increasing and banks are failing.

I don’t think so. But I’m realistic and think that global future doesn’t look problem-free and rosy. I worry because think I don't have much impact on global problems. I can see continually rising emissions of greenhouse gases, destruction of coral reefs, and the continuing loss of the remaining old-growth forests. I love old-growth forests. We have been destroying the planet for too long, and it is time to clean up the mess. We need to control the shopping decisions, and buy the right foods and things and most of all buy less of everything to save the world from global warming.
