THE FUTURE OF A CAR

Read the text about the future of a car. Prevod

Robert Lešnik is a very successful car designer, born in Maribor. After three failed attempts to enter the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana he studied design in Germany, and started to work with Volkswagen. He worked for Volkswagen for 9 years and contributed his ideas for designs of Passat, Eos, Scirocco and other cars. He is now a chief designer in Mercedes-Benz. He won the "Designer of the Year 2006" award, a Slovenian award for industrial design. This is how he sees the future of cars.

The car of the future will still have wheels and the passenger cabin, that is for sure. However, the rest could be very different to the car-shape known today.

All the new safety and assistance systems, as well as new powertrain options, will allow car designers to create new shapes for our future transportation devices.

If you wish so, your car will drive you autonomously to your chosen destination. The cars will be aware of each other, just like airplanes today. Radar-based assistance systems will be able to detect other road users even more effectively and, as vehicles will communicate with each other and warn of dangers ahead, our vision of accident-free driving will come closer.

Connected to your smart phone the car will constantly update the latest navigation data, as well as your personal favourite music and social-network connections. With gesture-control you will be able to use the whole windscreen just like your touch-pad.

The vehicle will be powered by electric energy or hydrogen, with no emissions. It will be absolutely green and sustainable. To drive a car in a sporty way on an empty road and be in control of a vehicle, can be pure fun.

Since there will be no engines powered by petrol anymore, the batteries will be inductive charged whenever the car is parked.

On other hand, to drive a car in certain situations like traffic-jam or travel long-distance can be very stressful, too.‎ In these situations you will be happy, to let your car take over.

Until all the vehicles using the same roads will be equipped with autonomous mode, the driver will still have to be prepared to take over the control. A driving license will still be needed.

In the end, however, regardless of how technologically-advanced your car will be, it will always have to be attractive, and this remains the job for us, car designers.

In your class, discuss your ideas of a car in the future. Do you agree with Mr. Lešnik? What do you think we will be able to do while we are driving to school or work? Will children be able to use cars on their own? Prevod
