(JUST) SHOPPING AT CHRISTMAS

Christmas is supposed to be the happiest time of the year. Yet, statistics show that many people fear it and regard it as a most depressing season. Why is it so? Discuss in small groups and give reasons for your view.
Listen to what Kate, Laura, and Ben think about Christmas. Then, match their names with their summarised views below.

Laura 's view: Presents should not be a substitute for love and caring, but shopping itself is not a negative thing. Corporations do not care for consumers, but only seek their own profit.

Ben 's view: Consumers have to change their behaviour first. Consumerism itself cannot ruin the true meaning of Christmas. Big companies meet the human desire for possessing things. The real Christmas happens on a personal level.

Kate 's view: People forgot what Christmas is all about, it has become too commercialised with big companies merely wanting to sell more consumer goods.

Ben said: "Be happy and accept things as they are and live the virtues. That's the real Christmas for me." What does the word that refer to? Pick the right answer.

That refers to {the_whole_previous_sentence;'the_real_Christmas';'the_virtues'} .

That is a demonstrative. Find out more about it in the ‘Grammar Log’.
